Credit Cards for Those With a Bad Credit Rating

Credit cards for bad credit are real credit cards for people who had had bad credit in the past but are showing signs that they are now getting their credit file in order.

Many people make the mistake of thinking that a ‘prepaid credit card’ will help repair their credit history when in actual fact a prepaid credit card won’t make any difference to your credit rating as it isn’t a credit card at all.

A credit card is a form of credit – whereby you can spend money that you you do not have and are then allowed to repay that money at a later date and by installments if required – hence the word ‘credit’.
A prepaid credit card does not offer any form of credit as it only allows you to spend money that you already have. In fact, the correct name for a ‘pre-paid credit card’ is a “prepaid Visa card”. Because it has been called a prepaid credit card by some people it has caused confusion.

If you have bad credit and you are looking for ways to repair your credit and improve your credit rating then a credit card can actually help but as you are probably aware, getting a real credit card when you have bad credit is not an easy task.

99% of credit card companies WILL decline your credit card application if you have some form of bad credit as they see you as a ‘high risk’. This can leave you in a ‘catch 22′ situation.

However, there are a few credit card companies who will issue you with a real credit card even if you do have bad credit – this is not guaranteed as it does depend upon how bad your credit rating is.

But do not let that put you off from applying for a credit card with one of these companies. You may be surprised by how easy it is to actually be accepted for a credit card with bad credit. And yes, as these are real credit cards then you can use them to repair your credit rating.

Credit cards for bad credit are a good thing as they can help you as long as you do not spend more than you can afford to repay and as long as you repay at least the minimum amount each month as shown on your credit card statement.

By doing this you will find that your credit rating will improve and after 6 months of running your new account in a satisfactory manner the credit card issuer will offer to increase your credit card limit. When this happens you will know for sure that your credit rating is getting better.

Just because you have a credit card for bad credit doesn’t always mean that you will have bad credit. In fact, using your credit card responsibly, you will eventually be able to apply for (and get) a credit card from other companies and not just credit cards for bad credit.

In the UK there are only two credit card companies who offer credit cards for people with bad credit – Vanquis and Capital One. It is up to you which company you prefer to apply to and the link below will take you directly to their websites where you can compare which card best suits you.

Remember, when you get your credit card, please use it responsibly.

Just a quick question. I was wondering if you knew what would happen if you got accepted for one of these credit cards when you have bad credit and then miss a payment? would your credit go from bad to worse?

    Thanks

    Nick

    Hi Nick,
As these are ‘real’ credit cards then yes, missing payments on these cards would make your credit rating go from bad to worse. These cards are seen as giving the user a ‘fresh start’ and a chance to improve their credit rating by showing that the card user can manage credit responsibly.

Those were great guidelines given by you. Even I think, there are several reasons why good credit can go bad. Many people attempt to buy everything they need — and want — in one fell swoop, often leaving themselves with credit-card debt, car payments, home mortgages and other types of debt to pay off every month. Working according to your guidelines can prevent such situations.
